Here Comes the Heat!

What better way to start a frigid winter day than to have the heater stop working, at least that’s how one particular late-January day started in our home. After successive attempt to reboot our furnace, we put out an urgent call for a HVAC person. A trusted friend quickly text’d one company name, and we retrieved another name via our neighborhood parent’s listserve. The trusted friend’s company told us they couldn’t see us until the following day. The listserve company told us they could be over that afternoon. Time was of the essence, with 2 little kids to keep warm, so we went down the listserve recommended path.

Upon arrival, the company owner examined our ailing furnace (which turned out to be 19 years old) and let us know a replacement was necessary. He made a short-term repair and immediately recommended a replacement that he would have installed in short order. He said this new furnace would have more velocity than our old one, to which I told him we didn’t want any more velocity, that what we had was more than enough. He said not a problem.

The following day (and it took all day), a new furnace was installed, and boy did it blow! The installation person was puzzled as to why this particular furnace was being installed, that is was quite big for a home our size. Our house quickly became a sauna. The velocity was off the charts, and the decibel level of this new furnace was akin to being on a jet. Our vents made loud whistling sounds. I phoned the owner and left a voicemail message to express my concern. He replied via text that he would look into it.

A few days passed and no word. I phoned again, and again I received a text telling me he had a schedule opening in 2 weeks time. 2 weeks! We would be dry as jerky and half-deaf in 2 weeks. I phoned back, only this time my own vocal velocity increased, not quite to the level of our new furnace (say what you mean, mean what you say, but don’t say it mean), but high enough that the owner had the installer over the next day. And the next day, the situation only got increasingly hot…(stay tuned, more to follow in next blog!)
